TERI in collaboration with the Department of Posts, India, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, and Rang De organizes a one-day workshop for Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS)
TERI, in collaboration with the Department of Posts, India; Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation; and Rang De organized a one-day workshop for Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) on September 13 at Post Office Anupshahar, Uttar Pradesh. The workshop focussed on appraising the GDS with the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs), and innovative financing mechanisms available for EVs.

The event was graced by Shri Tribhuvan Prasad Singh (Superintendent of Post), Shri Sachin Teotia (Inspector of Post), and Shri Mukul Anand (Branch Manager). Mr Piyush Saxena, Research Associate, TERI, participated in the workshop as TERI’s representative. The event witnessed participation from 50+ GDS. TERI is currently working on preparing a fleet electrification roadmap for mail motor service (MMS) vehicles of the Department of Posts, India. The project spans six cities, including Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai, to reduce transport emissions by the Department of Posts.

TERI moderates a session on ‘Smart and Connected Infrastructure’ for Urban Transition Mission at the Cities Summit, MENA Climate Week 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
TERI was invited to moderate the session on ‘Smart and Connected Infrastructure’ at MENA Climate Week 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, TERI was the moderator for the session and was accompanied by Ms Shiren Pandita, Area Convenor. The session brought together diverse perspectives and highlighted remarkable projects in the realms of data scenarios, digital twins, and climate investments. City representatives from Miami-Dade County, USA, the City of Bergen, Norway, and the Greater Manchester Authority, United Kingdom, showcased their pioneering efforts.

Notably, the session also featured valuable insights from Global Environmental Insights Explorer, IEA, and Platform for Smart & Climate Neutral Cities – Spain. Their contributions revolved around available solutions, identified needs, and innovation gaps, all geared towards addressing the most urgent challenges faced by cities as they work towards futureproofing.

TERI conducts an orientation workshop under the project ‘T-CAP’ in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

TERI along with its project partners NIUA and UNU-EHS organized the Urban Living Lab (ULL) Orientation workshop in Vishakhapatnam on October 18, 2023 under the T-CAP Project. The workshop was a critical step in the project with the naming of the ULL, i.e., Vizag PRAJAMUKHI Urban Living Lab. It further helped in disseminating the project findings, introducing ULL process flow and the participatory planning framework.

The workshop was conducted by Ms Shiren Pandita, Area Convenor; Ms Rhea Srivastava, Associate Fellow; and Ms Harshita Kaur, Project Consultant; from TERI. The workshop was designed to engage with stakeholders in collectively selecting and detailing the use cases (action-oriented elements) suitable for piloting in the upcoming phase of the Living Lab.

TERI organizes a technical session on 'Integrated and Sustainable Urban Freight and Logistics' at 16th Urban Mobility India Conference cum Expo 2023

TERI organized a technical session on ‘Integrated and Sustainable Urban Freight and Logistics’ at the 16th Urban Mobility India Conference cum Expo on October 27–29, 2023. The session was aimed at discussing the sustainable mobility solution for urban freight. The discussion points included metropolitan freight planning, data fusion with a planning perspective, NMTs for end-mile deliveries, the need for a dedicated policy on urban freight, and zero-emission urban freight vehicles, among others. The session witnessed different organizations working in sustainable transport and logistics and young researchers.

The panellists included Mr Sudhendu J Sinha, Advisor (Infrastructure Connectivity – Transport and Electric Mobility), NITI Aayog; Mr Shalendra Gupta, Co-founder and CFO, AltiGreen; Dr Gitakrishnan Ramadurai, Professor (Transport Engineering Division), IIT Madras; Prof. Sanjay Gupta, Dean (Research and Professor of Transport Planning), SPA Delhi; and Ms Priti Shukla, Programme Manager (Electric Mobility), Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.

TERI participates in a workshop roundtable discussion on ‘Compact Cities: Pathways towards India’s Sustainable Mobility Future’ at the 16th Urban Mobility India 2023 Conference cum Expo

TERI participated in a roundtable discussion on ‘Compact Cities: Pathways towards India's Sustainable Mobility Future’ at the 16th Urban Mobility India 2023 Conference, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Institute of Urban Transport (India) on October 27, 2023. Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, TERI was one of the panel members. He spoke on the strategies cities can adopt to accelerate shift to cleaner technology with efforts towards bridging research gap on horizontal versus vertical development in terms of energy savings and mobility. He further highlighted the need to incentivize private buses, improve attitude towards cyclists, increase Floor Area Ration (FAR) near metros, and nudging consumer behaviour for cleaner options. He suggested imposing a yearly quota on the registration of new private vehicles. The roundtable facilitated an exchange of ideas aimed at creating urban environments that are more environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially inclusive through better mobility.

TERI conducts a workshop under the project ‘Urban Act’ in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

TERI along with GIZ organized the first stakeholder workshop in Shimla on November 2, 2023 for the project ‘Integrated Urban Climate Action for Low-Carbon and Resilient Cities (Urban Act)’. The workshop aimed at gathering perspectives on climate-sensitive urban planning and development by delving into the local stakeholders’ experiences, ongoing initiatives, and insights into the prevailing ground conditions. Mr Bhupender Attri, the Honourable Commissioner of Shimla, graced the event and initiated the workshop with a keynote address that contextualized the city’s current situation and its challenges.

The workshop was conducted by Ms Rhea Srivastava, Associate Fellow; Ms Himanshi Sharma, Research Associate; Ms Harshita Kaur, Project Consultant; and Ms Tarishi Kaushik, Associate Fellow, TERI. The workshop was attended by diverse stakeholders: including state and local governments, civil society representatives, academia, students, and others.

TERI participates in seminar organized by the International Centre for Land Policy Studies (ICLPST) in Taoyuan, Taiwan

TERI participated in ‘Seminar on Knowledge-based Economy and City Competitiveness, Net Zero, and Sustainable Development’, organized by the ICLPST from October 18–31, 2023. Ms Anushree Harde, Research Associate, TERI participated in the seminar. The primary objective of the seminar was to introduce the experiences and achievements of Taiwan in city development, knowledge-based economy, city competitiveness, and net zero and sustainable development. Additionally, it provided a platform for participants to engage in fruitful discussions, share experiences, and build a human resource network among the Centre’s alumni.

TERI conducts a stakeholder consultation workshop on ‘Roadmap for India’s Energy Transition in Transport’

TERI along with Aramco Asia India organized stakeholder consultation with the objective to present baseline findings and preliminary findings from a primary survey and discuss the future scenarios for transport decarbonization on November 22, 2023. The workshop was part of the project where TERI with the support of Aramco Asia India is working to build a roadmap in the transport sector for energy transition across different segments: aviation, rail, road, and water.

The workshop was conducted by Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director; Dr Rahul Chakraborty, Senior Fellow; Ms Akshaya Paul, Research Associate; and Ms Shreya Gupta, Project Associate; from TERI. The session was also graced by Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI who helped in driving forward the session. The interactive workshop enabled the team to share findings while looking to engage with the stakeholders in building future pathways.

TERI delivers lecture on ‘Behavioural Economics in Transportation Research’

TERI was represented by Dr Rahul Chakraborty who delivered an invited lecture (online) titled “Behavioural Economics in Transportation Research”, organized by School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal on November 28, 2023. The lecture focussed on integrating experimental economics with transportation research to capture different aspects of human psychology in accessing transportation services and adoption of transport technologies.

TERI conducts a workshop under the project ‘Urban Act’ in Panaji, Goa

TERI along with GIZ India organized an inception-cum-stakeholder workshop for the project ‘Integrated Urban Climate Action for Low-Carbon and Resilient Cities (Urban Act)’, in Panaji on November 29, 2023. The workshop aimed to gather perspectives on climate-sensitive urban planning and development by delving into the local stakeholders' experiences, ongoing initiatives, and insights into the prevailing ground conditions. Mr Sanjit Rodrigues, MD-CEO- Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd., addressed the workshop. He highlighted the pressing impact of climate change, notably the increased backflow of water into rivers and drainage channels.

The workshop was conducted by Ms Rhea Srivastava, Associate Fellow; Ms Himanshi Sharma, Research Associate; and Ms Harshita Kaur, Project Consultant; TERI. The interactive workshop provided a significant platform for understanding the current scenario of Panaji City by exploring the causes, impacts, and opportunities associated with major urban climate issues.

TERI participates in Smart Freight Centre (SFC) India Roundtable at the Jio Convention Centre, Mumbai

TERI participated in SFC India Roundtable on ‘Freight Decarbonisation in India’ organized at the Jio Convention Centre, Mumbai on November 29, 2023. TERI was represented by Mr Piyush Saxena, Research Associate. He presented on clean freight programme which aims to decarbonize the road freight sector, which is projected to grow significantly by 2030 in India, and compared the global best practices and frameworks for clean freight programmes. TERI proposed a way forward for implementation of clean freight programme in India, involving a multi-stakeholder platform, a recognition scheme, and a policy framework.

TERI and SFC India sign MoU to jointly work towards decarbonizing freight transport

TERI and Smart Freight Centre (SFC) India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 28, 2023 to form synergies for projects related to freight transport and port electrification. The MoU was signed by Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI and Mr Christoph Wolff, Chief Executive Officer, SFC. This collaboration will boost initial discussions with SFC’s Clean Air Freight team to delve deep into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) regulations and roadmap for decarbonizing air freight. The partnership has opened the possibilities for collaborative efforts for upcoming projects, based on areas of cooperation.

TERI partners with SLMG Beverages Pvt. Ltd to prepare roadmap for fleet electrification in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

TERI has partnered with SLMG Beverages Pvt. Ltd to prepare a roadmap for fleet electrification of their operations in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. TERI has conducted a comprehensive study, involving ground surveys of 10 distribution centres across the city and prepared a roadmap of transition towards electrification. The study’s primary objective was to recommend suitable Electric Vehicle (EV) models to replace existing ICE vehicles within the SLMG Beverages fleet. The recommendations were strategically based on the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the proposed EVs, ensuring economic and environmental sustainability. The Beverages Company has announced its commitment to electrify its fleet of 5,000 ICE vehicles. The partnership is testament to TERI’s commitment to sustainability, driving transition to cleaner transportation options and reducing the carbon footprint.

TERI conducts a session on ‘Initiatives taken for Electric Vehicles Transportation’ at the Directorate of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

TERI was invited to conduct a session as part of the comprehensive field training/workshop of the PGDM students in sustainability management from the Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal on December 19, 2023. The TERI team represented by Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director and Mr Faiz Jamal, Research Associate provided their valuable insights into TERI’s transport model snapshot and the oganization’s multifaceted strategies for addressing climate change issues sustainably including some of their recent impactful and result-oriented studies that were implemented by organizations such as DMRC, Coca-Cola (SLMG Pvt. Ltd.), Indian Railways, etc.

TERI participates in a session ‘On a Mission to accelerate urban transitions through Innovation for Cities’ at UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub Pavilion COP28, UAE

TERI was invited to speak at the session ‘On a Mission to accelerate urban transitions through Innovation for Cities’ at COP28, on December 5, 2023. The session was part of the UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub Pavilion organized by The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) under the Urban Transitions Mission (UTM) and Innovate4Cities. The session provided an opportunity for engagement between cities, academia and private sector to respond to the challenges of climate change and drive innovation.

Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI was invited to the session as a panel member. He emphasized on the aspect of collaboration and the imperative of working together to devise ideas that address challenges and TERI’s involvement in various projects that adopt the quadruple helix approach, promoting co-creation with every segment of society for holistic development. His insights underscore TERI’s unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable urban development.

TERI participates in e-Fast Session on ‘Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport’ at COP28, UAE

TERI was invited to participate at the e-Fast Session on the sidelines of COP28. Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, TERI, spoke about the role of demand aggregation and economics for the success of electric truck adoption in India. He also highlighted the study on EV roadmap for India Post with positive signs on cost savings and payload factors. For the next COP, he wished for the success stories in the adoption of e-trucks to be included in the discussion. He was joined by Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI during the event.

TERI participates in event organized at the India Pavilion of COP28 UAE by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India

TERI participated in an event organized by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India at the India Pavilion of COP28 UAE. The TERI team was represented by Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director. During the discussion h​​​​e focussed on the strategies to reduce emissions from the road transport sector. Further, he talked about the role of alternative fuels, including electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells along with India’s achievements and challenges ahead.

TERI participates in BAJA SAEINDIA 2024

TERI participated in the launch event of Virtual Round of BAJA SAEINDIA 2024 hosted by Chitkara University on December 1, 2023. Mr IV Rao, Distinguished Fellow, TERI graced the occasion as a keynote speaker and congratulated the participating teams highlighting the importance of such events in driving innovation. The Virtual Round witnessed active engagement from 164 teams, comprising over 100,000 engineering students nationwide.
