TERI Appointed as Secretariat to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India
TERI has been appointed as Secretariat under Mission Innovation 2.0 to facilitate domestic interactions and act as a bridge to the Mission Innovation Secretariat. The initiative of Mission Innovation 2.0 is to drive innovation and promote flow of investment in research and development, followed by upscaling and commercialization of clean energy and low-carbon solutions by 2030. With India committed to achieving its short-term targets under Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2030, and its long-term goal of Net-zero Emissions by 2070, it will require high degree of professional intervention for communication, interaction, and collaboration between the involved stakeholders.

TERI Attends Urban-Act Workshop in Bangkok, Thailand
TERI team participated in the Urban-Act Regional Planning Workshop from March 20 to 24 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. The regional workshop was part of the project, Integrated Urban Climate Action for Low-carbon, and Resilient Cities (Urban-Act), which aims to support a transformation towards carbon and resilient urban development in five countries—India, the Philippines, Thailand, China, and Indonesia. TERI is one of the implementing partners in India, along with GIZ India and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA). The planning workshop, attended by Ms Shiren Pandita and Ms Rhea Srivastava, deliberated upon the scope, objectives, and deliverables of the Urban-Act project. The team participated in intensive brainstorming sessions to discuss the project strategy and interventions, ensuring alignment among country teams, national representatives, and international consortium partners.



TERI Delivers Session on Solar-powered Electric Mobility

TERI delivered an online session organized by NTPC School of Business on behalf of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), on 21 March 2023. The programme was targeted to impart training to ISA member countries' government officials from energy/power, rural development, and agriculture departments amongst others. The session conducted by Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, TERI, provided learnings on the types of electric vehicles (EVs), their benefits, and challenges, along with the EV ecosystem, policy landscape in India, and sales and penetration in the market. The emphasis was also laid on how the EV charging infrastructure has shifted the burden on the thermal power plants, and the role of clean and green energy, such as solar power to lead to the transition towards ‘true green mobility’.

TERI Organizes Dissemination Meeting with the Delegates from Railway Board

A dissemination meeting to apprise Members (Operation and Business Development), Railway Board and Secretary to Government of India, and senior officers of Railway Board about the key findings of the study Increasing Railway's Share in Freight Transport in India was organized on 29 April 2023. The study focused on three crucial aspects that could substantially support the Indian Railways' mission to regain the prime position in freight transportation—terminal infrastructure and operations, freight marketing policies, and determination of tariffs for freight movement on Indian Railways. A detailed presentation on TERI's findings and recommendations was carried out. Ms Jaya Varma Sinha (Member, Railway Board) appreciated the endeavours of TERI and showed keen interest in the outcome of the study. The ensuing discussion encompassed upcoming policies of Indian Railways and future opportunities for research and collaboration between TERI and Railways.



TERI Participates at International Conference on Imperatives of Sustainable Mobility: Towards Vision India@2047

TERI participated in the International Conference on Imperatives of Sustainable Mobility on 5 June 2023, where Mr I V Rao, Distinguished Fellow, TERI gave his insights on the priority things to do on this World Environment Day. The key sessions were focused on bio-initiatives, electrification, gas-based mobility, and circularity under the environment and sustainable mobility domain. Mr I V Rao emphasized testing different methods of transportation such as walking or cycling, before fixating on one mode. He added that this will help in prioritizing and improving the environment in the long run while preserving the existing resources. The conference imparted knowledge and shared rich experiences including learnings from expert speakers on low-carbon fuels, especially ethanol, and gaseous fuels, in addition to the circularity of material. Further, the deliberations on the aforesaid imperatives of sustainability could be utilized to suitably deal with modern-day issues such as decarbonization, carbon neutrality, and ESG compliance of the automotive sector, apart from providing provide a glimpse of existing and upcoming policies, the regulatory and legislative framework for alternative fuels, and sustainable mobility, at both national and international levels.

TERI Conducts Stakeholder Consultation with India Post Officials

TERI team conducted site visits, as part of an ongoing project titled Preparing Roadmap for Fleet Electrification for Department of Posts, India. These consultations were conducted between April and May 2023 in six different cities including Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai. The deliberations included understanding the current fleet characteristics being run in service of the Department of India Post and the future vision of transitioning to sustainable solutions in the mobility space.





TERI Organizes Needs Assessment Exercise under T-CAP in Visakhapatnam

TERI organized Needs Assessment Exercise in collaboration with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and United Nations University at Visakhapatnam during 12–15 April 2023, under the project—Transformative Climate Action Using Participatory Data-driven Decision-making Platforms (T-CAP). The assessment included guided interviews with targeted stakeholders including officials from Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) as well as community representatives from the city. This was followed by a design-thinking workshop with the stakeholders to deliberate on their needs and to understand the process of mitigation actions during disasters. The workshop was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Mayor of Visakhapatnam Smt. G Hari Venkata Kumari along with her delegation.



TERI also launched Visakhapatnam’s first Urban Living Lab (ULL) under project T-CAP on 17 May 2023, in the presence of the city’s Hon’ble Mayor Smt. G. Hari Venkata Kumari and Hon’ble Commissioner of GVMC Shri CM Saikanth Varma. On the occasion, Mayor highlighted the mitigation and adaptation measures taken in the city and how introducing ULL in city management will help bolster climate change measures. GVMC Commissioner further reiterated the need to prepare a comprehensive climate planning framework to make Visakhapatnam a resilient city. The launch witnessed the participation of targeted as well as affected stakeholders under the project and encouraged them to engage in problem-solving exercises that were conducted at the end of the event. The event provided an ample platform to showcase joint efforts to the people of Visakhapatnam and gather their support to make the project successful.

TERI Contributes to National Workshop on Fostering Participatory Climate Action in Indian Cities Using Technology

TERI contributed to the first national workshop organized by NIUA on Fostering Participatory Climate Action in Indian Cities using Technology under the project—Transformative Climate Action Using Participatory Data-driven Decision-making Platforms (T-CAP) from 9 to 10 May 2023. The workshop fostered interactive sessions between representatives from advocacy groups, partner institutions, start-ups, and officials from Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) to bolster action-oriented climate transformations and discuss on success stories, challenges, solution, and aspirations of the participants. The workshop was successful in stimulating discussions, creating connections, and exploring novel ideas to create transformative climate initiatives in Indian cities.



TERI Participates in Urban-Act Expert Workshop on Integrated Climate Resilience Planning

TERI team participated in the online expert workshop under the Urban-Act project on 7 and 16 June 2023. The workshops were organized by the German Technical Universities (TU Dortmund University and the University of Stuttgart) along with GIZ and focused on the aspects of spatial planning systems and policy frameworks in climate resilience in partner countries. Ms Rhea Srivastava presented on the Indian spatial planning systems and enabling environments for integrated climate-resilient urban development in the workshop held on 7 June 2023. The team members further participated in brainstorming sessions on the potentials, problems, needs, and entry points for integrated planning for climate-resilient development in their countries. The workshops provided a great opportunity to understand the planning mechanisms in practice in other countries and how the aspect of climate resilience has been integrated into the planning processes, both spatially and policy-wise.

TERI Participates in Delhi EV Policy 2.0 Workshop

TERI team participated in the stakeholder’s consultation on Delhi EV Policy 2.0 on 24 May 2023. Colleagues from Transport and Urban Governance Department actively participated in the brainstorming sessions centered on Strategizing Demand Incentives for EVs in Delhi and Enabling Accelerated EV Adoption in Commercial Vehicle Segments and gave their constructive inputs. The outcomes from each group were presented to Delhi EV Cell, in the presence of Shri Kailash Gehlot (Minister of Transport, NCT of Delhi). The consultation aimed to bring together stakeholders, international sectoral experts, and academicians to share achievements, learnings and experiences, and make recommendations towards the development of the next phase of the policy.
