TERI participated in an expert workshop on “Finalizing India’s Country Report on Urban Climate Finance” on April 15, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in partnership with GIZ India and India’s National Institute of Urban Affairs, as part of the Integrated Urban Climate Action for Low Carbon and Resilient Cities (Urban Act) project in India. Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI addressed the gathering being the city implementation partner of the project and provided insights and feedback on the report.

| EV Taskforce on Skilling in E-Trucking and EV Ecosystem Constituted by the Ministry of Heavy Industries |

TERI led a stakeholder consultation as part of the EV Taskforce on Skilling formed by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, jointly with International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) with the agenda of skilling in e-trucking and EV ecosystem in India. The objective of the meeting was to receive feedback and suggestions from the key stakeholders on the topic of skilling. The consultation witnessed active participation from diverse set of participants such as policymakers, course curators, training institutes and associations, testing agencies, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and other industry partners. The stakeholders presented their views and contributions to skilling initiatives in the industry.

| TERI at Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation for T-CAP Project |

Ms Shiren Pandita, Associate Fellow, TERI, visited Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on June 15 and 16 to engage with key stakeholders of the project “Transformative Climate Action using Participatory Data-Driven Decision-Making Platforms” (T-CAP). During the visit, she presented the structure, charter, and use case of the Vizag-Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL) to solidify and advance the project’s goals. She also met with the Commissioner of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and the Sustainable Resilient Unit (SRU) to explore potential synergies for the T-CAP project. The Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab in Visakhapatnam is set to begin its first use case and establish its core committees in the coming weeks.

He was part of the India Component Implementation Partners Meet organized by GIZ India with Mr Sudhendu Jyoti Sinha as the Chair of the session. Mr Qamar spoke about the multi-dimensional approach to decarbonizing the road freight sector in India, while highlighting the diverse set of work being done in the Transport & Urban Governance Division of TERI. Mr Qamar was also one of the panellists in the session 'Pathway to Zero Emission Trucking (ZET): Contextualising ZET strategies to meet net-zero targets' organized by International Transport Forum (ITF) and UC Davis India ZEV Research Centre

TERI participated in ET Rail show organized by ET Infra on June 26 and 27.
Ms Viral Joshi, Research Associate, made her presentation on the ‘Role of Railways in Freight Transport Decarbonisation’ and emphasized on the crucial role Railways play in India’s journey towards sustainable development future. She was also a part of the panel ‘Driving Sustainable Growth via Green Railways’ with Mr Yatendra Kumar, CAO, Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE). Ms Viral talked about the possible changes in rail freight policies and infrastructure which are crucial to increase the share of railways in freight transport in India. She laid emphasis on the role of Gati Shakti Multimodal Cargo Terminals and Dedicated Freight Corridor in maximizing the freight throughput. She also mentioned that along with the bulk commodities, Railways may also tap into other market traffic such as automobiles, parcels, containers, FMCG, perishables, etc.

TERI co-hosted a webinar on “GHG Emissions Accounting Framework India” on April 16, 2024, along-with Smart Freight Centre (SFC) and IIM Bangalore. Mr Piyush Saxena, Research Associate presented key insights from the scoping survey conducted by TERI and SFC on developing a freight emissions accounting framework for India. The webinar emphasized on the need for a tailored emissions accounting framework for India, focused on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions from various transport chain operations. By analysing the detailed responses, TERI has been able to identify trends, challenges and opportunities which will guide us in designing a robust emissions accounting framework for road freight operations.

Mr Qamar spoke about the regulatory gap in the reporting framework for fleet-level emissions from the road transport sector, which accounts for the highest share in overall transport emissions. He represented TERI’s work in the clean road freight domain.

TERI co-hosted a session on “Freight Emissions Accounting for India” along-with SFC India and IIM Bangalore. As part of the workshop on “Accelerating Low Emission Logistics in India”, the session emphasized on the methodologies, implementation strategies and datasets requirements for emissions accounting in the freight sector. While the freight sector plays a vital role in our economy, it also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution. It is high time that we address this issue and take concrete steps towards a sustainable and greener future.

The workshop focused on discussing the findings of the recent study followed by a panel discussion on ‘Net Zero: Ways to Accelerate the Adoption/Transition to Zero Emission Urban Freight in India’. During the panel discussion, she emphasized on the role of national/state level policies and commitments/targets from government and private sector to leverage the transition to zero emission freight movement. She also talked about the research and pilot implementation work carried out so far by TERI, and shared key learnings.

| Project Visit: TERI at IIT Madras and V.O.C. Ports for "Just-in-Time Arrival of Ships in India" |

TERI represented by Mr Abhishek Koka, Project Consultant, visited IIT Madras as part of project “Preparation of a DPR for Just-in-Time Arrival of Ships in India” undertaken by the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC). It involved discussions on selected projects of the National Centre of Excellence in Green Port & Shipping (NCoEGPS). The visit also included a trip to Chennai port to understand new Port Operating System (POS) and technologies implemented, assessing their utility for Paradip port. Additionally, he visited V.O.C. Port in Tuticorin to hold consultations with various departments and gather relevant data for the “Just-In-Time Arrival” project.

TERI released a report on “Baseline Study for Non-Urban Road Transport” in India at The India Habitat Centre, on June 12, 2024. Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI along with other stakeholders released the report. The report dives into the world of heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) market, baseline emissions and energy efficiency in trucking sector. It also includes an implementation strategy aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, drawing inspiration from Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme and international clean freight programmes.

The discussions highlighted the income opportunities generated by bike-taxis, their role as a driving force for the gig economy, and their sustainability and environmental impacts. Additionally, the conversation addressed the regulatory standards needed to facilitate industry growth.
