I have fond memories of working with Dr R K Pachauri for a very long period. His contribution to the global sustainable development is highly appreciated. He played a pivotal role in growing TERI to a world class organization. His leadership of the IPCC laid the ground for the discussions on climate change. In his death our country has lost a great environmentalist.

My friend Rajendra Pachauri, or Pachy as we all called him. We were friends from before the time he came to TERI and I remember how much he helped us in the Planning Commission when we were coping with the many challenges our energy policy faced in the seventies and eighties. Later, our contact intensified when he became involved in the global activities on climate change. His tenure in the IPCC as a chair was outstanding and the fifth assessment report that was prepared under his leadership led to a major turnaround in the priority accorded to climate issues in public policy.

But what we recognise and celebrate most is what he achieved in building TERI up from a small start-up research institution to the largest and India's most wide ranging producer of research, technology and policy analysis in environment, energy, and resources. He built up an organisation that had international standing and that has played a powerful rule in spreading the practical dimensions of sustainable development in public policy and corporate strategy.

TERI is what it is because of him. He is now no longer with us, but we must recognise that we are there because of him.

TERI is what it is because of Dr Pachauri’s untiring perseverance. He played a pivotal role in growing this institution, and making it a premier global organisation in the sustainability space.

Dr Pachauri. When I think of him, only one word comes to mind: 'Visionary'. But he was not merely a person with a vision but more importantly, someone who had capability- and self-belief - to turn that vision in to a reality. And the result is this institution, TERI and its myriad initiatives. One could learn just by observing his actions and words but those who had opportunity to work closely under his guidance, were fortunate indeed. A completely grounded person, Dr Pachauri in many ways was much ahead of his time. The whole issue of climate change is a classic example where not only he flagged it when it had not become fashionable to talk about, he worked tirelessly as an evangelist to mobilise the global citizens to act. His astonishing ability to find time for every Terrier despite continuously being flocked by highest of the world leaders, is something to cherish. Though the more common phrase is 'Think Global Act Local'; in his case it was always "Think Global Act (for) TERI"!

Dr Pachauri's passing away brings to a close an era of environmental crusade. I had the pleasure of a phone conversation with Dr Pachauri, years ago, but the world needed a larger than life figure to create a greater awareness of climate change issues. Dr Pachauri was that man. His untiring efforts brought to the fore an acknowledgement and environmental issues. An environmental leader par excellence. Dr Pachauri will be missed. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. The community of envoronmental activists is poorer today without Dr Pachauri.

Dr Pachauri’s work at TERI in developing a multifaceted research institute in the field of environmental sustainability is indeed inspiring. I would like to share my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Our family was blessed to have the august presence and blessings of Dr Pachauri on the occasion of wedding reception of my elder daughter Anjana on 19th November 2019.

He had a small piece of Äda (A South Indian sweet dish made of rice flour, jaggery and coconut) which he enjoyed to our great pleasure.

I am saddened to hear the sad demise of Dr. R K Pachauri, former TERI chief and a wonderful human being. In his death we have lost a true nature lover, an excellent orator, an unmatched visionary leader and an internationally acclaimed scientist. It is an irreparable loss to the society, nation and the scientific community. The void created by his untimely death will never be filled.

I am among the fortunate one who have worked with him (1999-2003) at TERI. I still cherish and fondly remember his humor and above all his motivational talk and comments to his colleagues. He will always be in our hearts and his words and advises will continue to spark young minds.

I am saddened to know about passing away of Dr R K Pachauri. Each and everyone who had been associated with TERI would remember him as a great leader, good administrator and lot more. He encouraged each one of us in one way or the other to step forward, work hard with full dedication and achieve success.

Dr R K Pachauri, an advocate of sustainability of the planet Earth and crusader of fighting climate change is not among us today. He provided great leadership to the IPCC and brought the attention of policy makers to consequences of climate change. The crowning glory came when IPCC was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace. He travelled almost non-stop to campaign for the cause of climate change. He talked to world political leaders, scientists, and civil society to define global policy for addressing climate change related issues. His contributions to the cause will be always remembered.

He was great institution builder who nurtured TERI from its inception and made it a world-class institute in a very short time. He also inspired many young scientists and nurtured people who later became leaders. These young leaders pursued outstanding research and innovation to take TERI to great heights. Today, TERI has been recognised as a premier institute in the field of energy, biotechnology, environment and sustainability. His idea of setting up TERI School of Advanced Studies was a visionary step. He had realised that we will need leaders to address issues related to adaptation and mitigation of climate impacts, and formal education is the answer. Today TERI-SAS is in the forefront of building capacity for ushering sustainability.

I have lost a personal friend whose memories I shall cherish forever. May his soul rest in peace.

As Ambassador to India from 2010 to 2015, I had many interactions with Dr. Pachauri. A remarkable personality that became the voice for climate action in India and worldwide. Without his efforts we would have been far worse off.

It was a surprise call that got me to call on Dr Pachauri in February 2012. He wanted someone to engage with India Inc to drive sustainable development as business imperative and strategy to save the planet for our next generation. I felt honoured that he had thought of me for this purpose.

When I started to work with him, the freedom he offered, the guidance he gave and the humility he exemplified in his interactions was something you cannot learn at business school. I am fortunate to have learnt them from Dr Pachauri. The three years and six months that I worked with TERI gave me immense satisfaction knowing that I was working for a larger cause, and rewarding experiences that I will always cherish.

His leadership in driving action against climate change with missionary zeal or playing cricket to win on the field - were something I observed closely with high esteem.

May God bless his soul. I join all at TERI to pray for peace and restful heavenly abode of the departed soul.

I have known Patchy for about 40 years and in addition to our working relationship we have established a very special friendship. I had the pleasure to have lunch with him in Delhi last 7th October and he updated me on progress he made with the movement he initiated a few years ago. I was expecting his visit to Geneva during the first quarter of 2020 but very sadly this will never happen.

Extremely saddened to learn about the untimely passing away of Dr Pachauri – my dear friend Patchy. He was an outstanding institution builder and a devoted environmentalist. He built TERI into a world class multidisciplinary institution with his utter dedication, deep passion and unwavering commitment. I have had always great admiration for his outstanding leadership qualities and for his global perspectives on environment and sustainable development. He has left behind a formidable legacy through his immense contribution at the national and international levels. His stewardship of IPCC as its chairman was remarkable and it won him a great deal of admiration and recognition.

My close association with him for more than four decades has left an indelible impression on me of his tireless endeavours and his tremendous achievements. He has left behind an immensely valuable and lasting legacy. I pay my tributes to an outstanding individual, and my dear friend Patchy, who is sadly no more with us.

I am very saddened to hear of the passing away of Dr Pachauri.

I worked closely with Dr Pachauri when I was in the Ministry of Environment & Forests. His breadth of vision was apparent in any exchange of views, much of it rooted in his commitment to establishing a multifaceted TERI with an enduring presence.

Dr Pachauri will be remembered for a lifetime of accomplishments and also for nurturing the endeavours of others. Building TERI and steering the IPCC in the direction of becoming the preeminent global voice in our understanding of climate change were among Dr Pachauri's many achievements.

Dr Pachauri was an institution in himself who helped India getting a pole position as far as climate change debate and actions at global level are concerned. I got a perspective of him from outside TERI and was lucky to have met him about a month ago. It is with deep sorrow that I received the announcement of the demise of Dr R K Pachauri.

I had the privilege as Ambassador of meeting him only once but I could feel his deep concern for developing relations throughout the world for sustainable development and I was impressed by his great personality.

His contribution as Founder-Director of TERI and his leadership of the IPCC was deeply recognized by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and by the members of the Board of Directors of the Foundation Prince Albert II of Monaco.

He was one of the first voices to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our environment at a moment when the cause was not an international priority. His example will remain forever for those who now have the responsibility to take actions for the preservation of our planet.

In this hour of grief, I address all my condolences to his family and to the TERI family.

I deeply mourn the passing away of Dr Rajendra Pachauri , one of my dear friends and a comrade in the crusade for better national energy and environment policies that are essentially knowledge based. For doing this well he tirelessly worked and successfully created a world class think tank called TERI. He was undoubtedly one of our best institution builders.

Dr Pachauri was also a keen strategic thinker and over the period of more than three decades he helped the different governments of our country chart out national policies that promote the goals of sustainable development. Whether I was working with the Finance Ministry or with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas he was like a one-man think tank to us in working out sectoral reforms. He was ever willing to help out as he was deeply committed to contribute towards India regaining her rightful place in the global affairs.

My heartfelt respect and condolences for a great soul, a towering personality, a stalwart, an activist, a visionary, and all that he was. His contributions to TERI, IPCC, or in the global environmental circuit are irreplaceable and unforgettable. Moreover, he was able to develop a connection with each and every individual he communicated with, how much ever insignificant he or she may be.

I remember the first time I met him he had come up all alone to the first floor lab of TERI's Guwahati centre, where I was working alone. He said, “Hi! How are you? What work are you doing right now?” I was just stunned. He was so casual, warm, and down to earth. After that I interacted with him many times, and each time he would make me extremely comfortable.

My sincere condolences on the passing away of Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, former DG of TERI, and former chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). I can understand very well what you are going through, having lost your former leader and a great colleague.

As the founder and ex-Director General of TERI, Dr Pachauri was an Indian energy and climate change authority with remarkable qualities; he will always be remembered among us as a vocal advocate of tough action against global warming.

Under his strong and wise leadership of the two assessment cycles (AR4 and AR5, 2002-2015), IPCC provided the scientific foundation to enable the world reach a consensus on climate change and hence the Paris Agreement. His role was pivotal in lifting the scientific and political profiles of the IPCC as a collective laureate of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize shared with Mr Al Gore in 2007.

Once again, I would like to express my personal condolences to Dr Pachauri's family, friends and colleagues during this period of mourning. I knew him personally since 2004, he will be dearly missed.

My Chinese colleagues and I are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing away of Dr RK Pachauri, an outstanding world scientist and a great leader in climate change science.

Dr Pachauri had long been active in climate change science and relevant policy-making. He devoted himself to propel the advancement of climate change science and response options. He was also keen to speak up for the developing countries. He was rigorous and decisive in working, diligent in thinking and bold in challenging. He served as the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its Fourth and Fifth Assessment cycle during 2002-2015, and led IPCC to produce landmark assessment reports on climate change, which reversed the understanding among the international community in combating climate change. The knowledge built up and communicated in those reports also laid solid foundations for the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). These tremendous efforts and brilliant outcomes have contributed substantially to responses to climate change, environment protection and sustainable development of human society. Under his leadership, the IPCC team won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

I, on behalf of climate change scientists in China and myself, hereby express our sincere mourning on the passing away of Dr RK Pachauri, and send our sincere condolences to his family.

We shall follow his steps and continue our efforts to strive for advancement in climate change science and the development of human civilization.

Dr Pachauri - For me the words are synonymous with a vision for a safe and equitable world. I worked closely with him for over three decades. Many of my former colleagues have spoken about his caring, his empathy, and his compassion that he carried on his sleeve, his belief in his colleagues and his inherent professional integrity - and he had an abundance of these attributes. But, we also had the opportunity to witness his single minded devotion to making TERI a great institution, an institution with scientific capabilities that would match up with similar global institutions. He placed TERI on the global map yet grounded it too to respond to the challenges of the poorest communities. TERI developed under his vision and leadership as a policy think tank, a scientific research institution, an academic institution and an NGO all rolled into one. It integrated the three pillars of sustainable development and ensured that it took a multi-stakeholder perspective to problem solving – making each and every one of us proud to be part of this globally unique, ahead-of-its-time institution.

Behind the scenes, he lived, breathed and got his sustenance from TERI. There was a willingness to fight for what he wanted to achieve, to push himself to the point of punishment in his quest to raise funds and make an impact, to strive towards providing a happy and equitable working environment for all employees, and to create a culture of performance. And for this last - he cajoled us, encouraged us, even blackmailed us! And, of course, he played cricket with a passion that many much younger colleagues envied! While each one of us who worked with him will have our own personal memories to treasure, Dr Pachauri must be remembered as one of the great institution builders of our country and as someone who helped developing countries as a whole to hold their own in international climate and sustainable development negotiations.

Dr Pachauri, you will be greatly missed at all levels and by the thousands that have gone through TERI.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the demise of Dr Pachauri. My father (V Gopinathan) was associated with TERI and hence with Dr Pachauri since TERI’s formative years. In those days, TERI's office was housed in a bungalow in Delhi’s Jorbagh area. Dr Pachauri used to actively participate in the winter picnics at Gwal Pahadi. He delighted us by gracing the wedding reception of my daughter at Delhi Flying Club in 2005. He will always be remembered as a good, kind and benevolent person.

It's never easy when we lose someone as dear as our Dr RK Pachauri. It is hard to live without missing his presence. In our hearts, his memory lives and his love endures.

Dr RK Pachauri was a leader in the true sense. He was able to take people along with him to achieve any idea that would help TERI's cause. He was a visionary with a missionary zeal to realise it (his vision). He would always say that anything we do should be world class. He was a father figure for all of us in TERI. We will miss him.

It is with a heavy heart that I send this tribute on the death of Dr RK Pachauri. It has been my privilege to have known him for nearly four decades. Following the oil crisis in the 1970s, energy policymaking came to become central to national economic policies. Dr Pachauri provided leadership to the intellectual and institutional aspects of this challenge. He was among the few intellectuals globally who visualised the nexus of energy, environment, sustainable development, and climate change. Dr Pachauri was a visionary with a practical slant. As an IPCC author, I had the privilege to observe his leadership as the IPCC Chair. As a colleague, I shall remember him as an intellectual with a global vision. More so, I shall continue to respect him as a friend whose mind and heart were rooted in India’s development.

I share your grief at the shocking news of Dr Pachauri’s passing away, as I am sure many of us who knew him also do. The TERI I joined in 1986 was defined by Dr Pachauri. Back then, I was in awe of him and his larger than life persona. It did not diminish a whole lot even after I matured professionally. There are many fond memories of interactions with him. It is sad to hear of his demise.

Deepest condolences. He was a prominent face in the earliest phase of scientific assessments of climate change that informed the Global Climate Action policies and agenda. Prayers.

Dr RK Pachauri truly nurtured TERI and made it internationally famous through his untiring networking efforts. It is quite a challenge for anyone. He far surpassed his technical training and education to take to the world an idea he strongly believed in, and supported it with necessary finances subsequently. I truly respect him for what he was able to contribute to the global economy and environment and India's national agenda for climate change.

I believe we lost a valuable human resource we had created for our country.

His loss is irreparable. Apart from losing a great role model in him, I am sure cricketers like me who are of a bygone era will miss him on the cricket field as well. I am happy he did not have to suffer much except in his last few months. May God rest his soul in peace.

I was so sorry to hear about the untimely passing of my former boss Dr Pachauri. He was a wonderful person who will be sorely missed. His warm spirit and generosity was a joy to all who knew him. I had an association with him since 1988, when I joined TERI. He was truly an incredible person who had an amazing effect on everyone who knew him. I cannot imagine how difficult this is to believe and I am much saddened to hear this news. (It is the) most sad day for all those who have been associated with him in one way or the other. It is a personal loss to me but the loss is far bigger to the society. His warmth and generosity made us all better people and we consider ourselves lucky to have known and worked with him. He will be missed terribly. Professionally, I do not see anyone to match him. He taught climate change and sustainability to the whole world.

A great visionary and institution builder with amazing memory, an eye for detail, and super human capacity to work. Dr Pachauri is a great motivator (he will always be a leader and motivator). His vision, efficiency, and time management skills were second to none. He used his skills fully to influence global thinkers and leaders about the adverse impacts of climate change and the need for sustainable living.

I am sorry to hear of Dr Pachauri's passing. I am reminded of his four extraordinary qualities - He was an institution builder par excellence; He was indefatigable – working twice as hard as people half his age; He was a superb communicator of climate change ideas, especially to leaders of countries and; He reposed his faith in countless young graduates and gave them responsibilities. Like me there are numerous others who owe their first jobs to him and will forever remain in his debt.

I vividly recall my first meeting with Dr Pachauri back in 1985 at 90, Jor Bagh. I was impressed by his in-depth knowledge of biological sciences. We had innumerable interactions during my tenure (July 1985 to April 2009) and I cherish his valuable guidance. Words are not enough to describe the energetic, visionary, self disciplined, charismatic personality that we all fondly called 'Pachy'. Apart from his professional excellence known to everyone, he had great humane qualities which I can never forget.

On the one hand, he was a strict disciplinary in official works and on the other a caring head of the TERI family in the true sense, extending support to all during testing times. I am thankful to God that I got the opportunity to meet him in October 2019 and tell him personally that I am ever indebted to TERI, and to you Sir!

I pray to the Almighty that you rest in peace and to provide courage to the family to bear this loss.

Dr R K Pachauri is no more. As chairman of IPCC and DG of TERI he was one of the prominent Indian voices and faces at global climate discourses. However a chapter in history of energy and climate change is now over.

I never worked with him, but had the rare opportunity once to spend a full day with him in Bhopal. The occasion was launching the process of first SAPCC in 2011. We requested Dr Pachauri to give a pep talk to the who’s who of MP’s bureaucracy. The program was chaired by then Chief Secretary, GoMP, and all the ACSs, Principal Secretaries and HoDs attended the event. Dr Pachauri, in his unique style, spoke at length about the cause and impacts of climate change and the need for actions at the state level. He also lauded EPCO’s efforts towards making SAPCC. It made all the difference. As a follow-up to his talk we received very crucial support from all the departments. EPCO and TERI also inked a MoU and agreed to work together on issues of mutual interest.

His passion was quite evident in his commitment towards his work. He had come to Bhopal directly from the US. Severely jet lagged, Dr Pachauri somehow managed to stay awake to keep up with his very busy schedule and deliver the talk to a distinguished yet demanding audience at Vallabh Bhawan. He spoke to the youth at RGPV, launched a program on Lighting a Billion Lamps at Urja Vikas Nigam, and finally had a meeting with the then HCM.

One can safely and confidently say that Dr Pachauri was a true Climate Champion. He was a man with vision who knew the art of building institutions, be it IPCC or TERI. Under his leadership, IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

During his stay in Bhopal, I developed a good personal and professional rapport with him, which we maintained for long. He gifted me a TERI necktie as souvenir, which is still a priced possession and remembrance for me. Rest in Peace Dr Pachauri.

Dr R K Pachauri was a global citizen. History will remember him as the trailblazer of sustainable development, education and research. It would be our responsibility to carry his mantle and stand for the principles he lived for.

It is with profound sadness that we had to learn about the mournful demise of Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, Nobel laureate, and outstanding national and international advocate of climate action.

I am deeply saddened by the news that Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri has passed away. He devoted his professional life to the environment and sustainable development. His work has made a major contribution to improving the state of knowledge on climate change and raising awareness among the general public and international decision-makers on this complex contemporary issue.

With his demise, we undoubtedly lost one of the most ardent advocates of the environment, who will be greatly missed.
