First of its kind life cycle estimation of energy consumption and CO2 emissions for transport sector in India |
TERI recently completed a first of its kind life cycle energy and CO2 emissions study of transport modes in India. The study commissioned by the National Transport Development Policy Committee (NTDPC), Govt. of India has established a methodology to carry out life cycle analysis (LCA) of transport projects to account for their energy consumption and CO2 emissions at construction, operations and maintenance life stages. The study demonstrates the application of LCA methodology on five different transport systems -national highway, long distance passenger rail, metro rail, BRTS, and urban road. The results provide interesting insights into energy and CO2 emissions intensity of transport modes indicating the need to account life cycle impacts while considering energy and CO2 emissions of different transport modes. |

Climate Resilience Strategy for the city of Guwahati, Assam |
TERI has prepared a detailed City Climate Resilience Strategy (CRS) for the city of Guwahati in Assam (India). Located on the banks of river Brahmaputra in an ecologically sensitive hilly region, the city is vulnerable to climate risks due to the current urban development practices. A part of the Rockefeller Foundation's Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) initiative, CRS proposed by TERI aims to make the city more resilient to prominent climate risks in the region. The study entails detailed assessment of climate risks and vulnerable urban sectors, identification and development of adaptation strategies and mainstreaming them into the city's development agenda. |

TERI, University of California, San Diego and California Air Resource Board conduct a 3-day workshop on reducing transport emissions |
TERI, University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and California Air Resource Board (CARB) conducted a 3-day joint workshop in Oakland, California from 21st to 23rd October, 2013 to launch ICAMP (India-California Air Pollution Mitigation Program), a World Bank funded program focusing on reducing emissions from transport sector. The workshop intended to facilitate knowledge exchange on science and impacts of |
vehicular emissions, vehicular technologies, fuel quality requirements, and urban transportation issues. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Jerry Brown, Governor of California in the presence of Dr. R K Pachauri, Director General, TERI, Ms Mary Nichols, Chariman, CARB, and Prof. Ramanathan, UCSD.
The workshop discussed the need to reduce air pollution in light of degrading environmental quality, increasing health impacts, increasing losses due to adverse effects on agricultural crops and harvest, and other related issues. There was a clear consensus on joining hands and sharing knowledge and experiences between the two countries. The deliberations and discussions in the workshop helped in paving a way forward for ICAMP. The event will be followed up by a Policy Conclave in New Delhi in February, 2014.
The proceedings of the workshop shall be available on TERI's website soon. |

TERI University organizes a lecture on "Natural disaster and resilient transport: Learning from East Japan earthquake and tsunami" |
TERI University organized a lecture on “Natural disaster and resilient transport: Learning from East Japan earthquake and tsunami” on 25th October 2013. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Yoshitsugu Hayashi, Director, International Research Center for Sustainable Transport and Cities at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University, Japan.
Prof. Hayashi talked about the damages caused by natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis to the road, rail and air transport infrastructure with examples from East Japan. The examples highlighted that the extent of damages magnifies when hard as well as soft measures fail simultaneously during the recovery process. Prof. Hayashi discussed the importance of redundant infrastructure, its effect in the affected areas in terms of reduced quality of life (QOL) and the need to develop resilient communities. The lecture concluded with discussion on key strategies for developing resilient communities. |
